The Tigers and Aggies will face off in the first game of the season on March 5 at Tiger Stadium in Arlington. While it’s not known how big this matchup is heading into, the Aggies are looking to build on their historic upset win over Florida State last week when they defeated a depleted team that included five players who were unavailable due to injury. On Tuesday evening, A&M beat Alabama by three points and now they must make history again when they face one of the best teams in the country. This may be another close game as both sides are coming off big losses. However, there are some key differences between these two schools that should help decide how they go about things.
Texas A&M vs. Texas (2021) College Basketball Picks & Predictions
Texas A&M vs. Texas Preview
While this isn’t exactly a classic rivalry, the Aggies are still considered a top-ranked team and have a lot of talent on offense. They’re led by Jalen Wilson Jr., Tyrese Maxey and Jalen Williams, but they still need more production from the rest of their roster. Opponents like Baylor can play well against them, so they will likely have to find ways to slow down this team and force turnovers. In addition to those offensive pieces, there are also some defensive improvements that could help make A&M dangerous. Defensively, they have improved significantly since losing star center Jaden Jackson last fall. Jordan Walsh and Bryce Ferguson both played excellent defensive minutes at middle linebacker with Travis McDaniel and Tre’von Walker getting great performances in the frontcourt as well. All three freshmen have experience playing together since they have been teammates in college since high school.
A&M Prediction: Texas A&M 66–63 Arkansas
On paper, this should be an intriguing matchup between the Aggies and the Sooners. Both teams have had strong seasons under new coaching for years now, yet neither has beaten anybody else this year. It’ll be interesting to see which way this game goes, but I think what really matters is how each team plays in the second half. If Texas A&M can get out-of-bounds and knock down shots consistently, they should definitely have a chance, especially if they end up winning the game. However, if the Aggie defense comes through and takes away what little offensive opportunities Texas A&M have, then they will be able to limit the scoring chances for Texas A&M.
Auburn vs. Tennessee (2022) NCAA Men's Basketball Championship Picks And Predictions
Tennessee (2022) vs. Indiana (2022): What To Know Before You See Them Play
It’s going to be a tough battle from start to finish, but once we know where it stands, we can tell how good each team is. There’s a reason why most people aren’t talking about this particular matchup in the media — the SEC Tournament is just around the corner and they all want to make sure that they get their first taste of the national championship on Friday night. One thing we do know is that Tennessee is currently sitting fourth in the nation in offense, averaging almost 80 points per game. That puts them in position to come through and take advantage of any mistake Texas A&M makes.
Auburn (2022) vs. Georgia Tech (2022): How Will These Two Meet?
Georgia Tech is a team that hasn’t won anything major since 2016. However, they were right back on the court in February after being knocked out of postseason contention following their loss to Miami on January 18th. Their only other wins came in 2017, 2020, 2021, or 2022. With this said, Georgia Tech certainly has enough talent on their roster to compete with anyone in this tournament. They are led by four incoming freshmen in Malik Bynum, Myles Terry, Johnell Davis, and Brandon Johnson. Those four freshmen combined for 19.6 points per game last year, which is pretty impressive considering they didn’t play in the same position group.
Prediction: Michigan 50 – 52 Virginia Tech
The Hokies had quite a rough season after making it to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament before falling to No. 16 seed Gonzaga on December 29. This was primarily due to several factors, including injuries, COVID issues, and lack of practice time with the Big Ten leading the conference in terms of player development. Now, with all these issues resolved, the Huskies are starting to show signs of life. The biggest difference this year is how much depth the coach has put on his bench, allowing him to rely on transfers from outside the state. As always, he has relied heavily on veteran guard Aaron Henry, who came out of retirement in 2022 to play for the Wolverines.
Virginia Tech shot 37.3 percent from the field during their defeat to Maryland in the Sweet 16 on Saturday. Despite having a few turnover issues, they stayed within the 20-20 range. For comparison’s sake, Indiana University, who went 8–0 in league action last year, shot 40.1 percent in their first round outing. The Terrapins shot 41.5 percent. Overall, we can expect to see the Hokies being able to put up a fight, especially when playing in such a difficult environment.
Prediction: Oklahoma 51 – 60 Iowa State
It’s no secret that Mike Gundy is one of the hottest coaches in football, and he is undoubtedly going to continue to try to lead the Thundering Herd to victory this season. He has done that so many times in his tenure and has proven himself time and time again. We have seen him get rewarded for doing so many times, and you would be surprised how often he gets the credit he deserves. But that doesn’t mean that the Red Raiders won’t get caught up in this matchup with their opponent.
The Cyclones have a great record in the American Athletic Conference and haven’t lost a single conference game this year. In fact, they are tied for fifth in the ACC West standings and just ahead of Syracuse and Creighton. Unfortunately, the Hurricanes are currently 10–9 overall, and while they have their moments of brilliance, they are not very deep defensively. They are also without multiple returning starters, which will hurt them heavily. Still, they are capable of beating opponents with ease without hurting themselves too much. The Blue Devils, on the other hand, have a long list of talented players that will be able to step up and deliver at clutch time when needed. Of course, this is not guaranteed, and this game will likely come down to who does what better than anyone else.
Prediction: UCLA 53 – 61 Arizona State
Arizona State is a perennial contender, but it is also one of the best recruiting classes in the country. Between the transfer fees paid to sign the likes of Dario Alford, Jonathan Greenwood, and James Miller, the Sun Devils have plenty of assets to work with. They are also led by six incoming freshmen in Devin Bagley III, Isaiah Blackmon, Michael Norman, Jaylen Clark, Kameron Moore, and Elijah Ponder. Along with the aforementioned freshman, there are also seven sophomores in Alex Young, Amari Bailey, Ethan Anderson, Josh Giddings, Jacob Houser, and Keo Motte. All told, these guys are set for a huge boost in productivity and competition.
UCLA, on the other hand, is going to have to deal with the potential loss of former starter Zach Edey. However, the Bruins do have talent and plenty of firepower on their side. The Pac-12 has struggled with its basketball teams this season, but UCLA seems to be the exception. They are currently 6–7 in conference games (4–6 in conference play), but they are on pace to finish 4–8. Regardless, UCLA is a team that needs to be ready to go into every week and take advantage of whatever opportunity presented itself.
Prediction: UNC 49 – 62 Marquette
As mentioned earlier, Marquette has gone 11–10 in league play — this includes 15 straight trips to the Elite eight. After losing to No. 14 seed Saint Mary’s in their opening matchup, they fell to No. 24 seed Kansas State in their next matchup. So far, Marquette has gotten off to a nice start this season and is currently 12–5 in conference play. They are ranked seventh in the Northeast Conference, which bodes well for the future. Even though they are just a couple days removed from their loss to Kansas State, they definitely have a feel for what’s happening and how it’s affecting them.
